Before You Start
Get the Home Builders Manual. The NHBRC issues it once your application is in. Use it as your main study resource. Read what the assessment actually involves first to understand what to expect and what to confirm when you book.
Week One: Work Through the Manual
Work through the manual once, section by section, without trying to memorise it. Start by getting familiar with the sections and where to find the information you need.
Then practise one area at a time. Every question here names the part of the standard it comes from, so a wrong answer tells you which page to open. The eight areas and the standards behind them are set out in what the test covers.
Week Two: Take Timed Practice Tests
Knowing the material and sitting a paper are different skills. Take timed tests until you pass them consistently rather than occasionally. Ours mark at 80%, deliberately stricter than the 13 out of 25 that candidates report for the real thing, to give you a more demanding practice target.
After each test, go back through every question you got wrong and read the clause behind it. Use focused drills to revise your weak areas before taking another full test.
The Last Few Days
- Re-read the areas your results still flag, not the ones you are already good at.
- Confirm the appointment with your provincial customer care office.
- Pack your ID and manual the night before. Candidates report an open-book assessment with no phones allowed; confirm this with your provincial office.
- Keep the evening before your assessment for rest and final preparations.
How to Know You Are Ready
Look for consistent passes across several timed tests and steady results in each study area. If one area remains difficult, focus your remaining revision there. Practice results can guide your study, but cannot guarantee an assessment result.
