What to Confirm Before Assessment Day

Very little about the day itself is published. The NHBRC sets out how to apply and how to book, and stops there — so the honest checklist is mostly a list of questions to ask the office you booked through, asked early enough that the answers can still change what you do.

Ask Your Provincial Office These Five Things

Booking runs through a provincial customer care office, and that office is the authority on your appointment. Ask when you book, and write the answers down:

  • Where and when. The physical address, the time to arrive, and whether the appointment is confirmed or provisional.
  • What identification. Which document, and whether a copy is wanted as well as the original.
  • What you may bring in. Whether the manual may come with you, whether notes or tabs in it are allowed, and what happens to your phone.
  • How long you have, and how many questions. Neither is published; the office running your session knows.
  • How and when you get the result. And what the process is if you need the second attempt.

If an answer differs from anything on this site, the office is right and we are out of date. Tell us and we will fix the page — that is what our corrections process is for.

What Candidates Report, and Why It Is Not a Rule Reported

Candidates and preparation providers commonly describe an open-book assessment of about 25 multiple-choice questions, an identity document and the manual allowed in, phones away, a result the same day, and 13 out of 25 to pass. Reports of the duration split between one hour and two.

None of that is published by the NHBRC. It is a useful picture of what to expect and a bad basis for a decision — turning up without something because a forum post said it would be provided is a wasted attempt. The pass mark guide sets out which of these figures are official and which are not.

The Week Before

  • Revise the areas your practice results still flag, not the ones you enjoy.
  • Practise finding passages in the manual, not only reading them. On an open-book paper, speed of lookup is part of what is being tested.
  • Confirm the appointment, in case the time or the venue has moved.
  • Sort out travel and how long it takes to get there at that hour.

The Night Before

  • Pack your identity document and the Home Builders Manual, plus anything the office told you to bring.
  • Put your booking reference and the office’s number somewhere you can reach without a signal.
  • Stop studying at a sensible hour. Nothing learned that evening will be recalled under time pressure.

If It Does Not Go Well

You have two attempts within 30 days of paying your application fee, and the NHBRC’s own training material refers to applicants who have failed a first or a second assessment — a retake is an ordinary part of the process, not a verdict. Write down the topics that caught you out while they are fresh, and spend the gap on those.

The assessment is one requirement among several, and the registration guide sets out the rest of the sequence.

Sources and Review

  • NHBRC, nhbrc.org.za — booking through a provincial customer care office, the Home Builders Manual, and the two attempts within 30 days of payment. Checked 9 August 2026.
  • Candidate and preparation-provider reports for the open book, the identity document, the phones-away rule, the same-day result and the duration. The NHBRC publishes none of these, which is exactly why the page tells you to ask.
